Course Tutor – English Writing & Communication

Job Title: Course Tutor – English Writing & Communication

About OSP

The Oxford Scholars Programme (OSP) is a prestigious summer school designed for high-achieving students aged 14–18 years from around the world. Our mission is to provide an intellectually stimulating academic experience that fosters personal growth, critical thinking, and lifelong skills.

We are seeking an exceptional communicator to lead our English Writing & Communication course. This role is for an academic who can inspire students to find their voice, whether through the rigor of an academic essay or the nuance of creative storytelling.

The Role

In this role, you are the mentor for the next generation of writers and speakers. You own the transition from basic literacy to advanced rhetoric. You will guide students through the complexities of audience awareness, literary technique, and public speaking, helping them transform their ideas into persuasive and creative narratives.

What You Will Own

  • Instructional Leadership: Delivering 9 days of interactive morning classes within this 14-day programme. You will take our 80% core content and infuse it with your own 20% “expert’s edge” to explore literary analysis, rhetoric, and creative writing forms.
  • Creative Workshops: Facilitating afternoon sessions focused on writing practice, storytelling exercises, and presentation skills. You will lead peer-review sessions that help students refine their work with professional polish.
  • Material Design: While OSP provides the syllabus outline and handbook, you own the creation of all session materials. This includes designing professional slides/presentations, writing prompts, and resource packs for public speaking to ensure high-energy, seamless delivery.
  • The “Tutorial” Experience: Managing a high-impact learning environment with a maximum of 10–12 students. This small class size allows you to provide the personalized mentorship and academic rigor characteristic of the Oxford tutorial system.
  • Assessment & Feedback: Owning 3 hours of marking/feedback to provide scholars with the detailed critiques needed to refine their prose and presentation style.
  • Safeguarding & Wellbeing: Maintain awareness of student welfare and escalate concerns in line with programme safeguarding policies.

Compensation

  • Teaching: Approximately 31.5 teaching hours, paid £40–£50 per hour (dependent on expertise).
  • Preparation Time: 8 hours paid prep at £25 per hour.
  • Training: Paid induction at £25 per hour (typically 2–3 hours total).
  • Marking time: 3 hours of paid marking time at £25 per hour.
  • Total Estimated Compensation: £1,585 – £1,925 (includes teaching, prep, marking, and mandatory training).
