Soaring Above Oxford: A Life-Changing Two Weeks at OSP
Ali David
OSP Scholar 2024
Hi, my name is Ali David, and I came from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to attend the Oxford Scholars Programme. This past summer of 2024, I had the incredible opportunity to be part of this two-week life changing experience, which left a lasting impact on me both academically and personally. From the moment I arrived in Oxford, I knew I was about to embark on a journey that would broaden my horizons in ways I couldn't have imagined.
I chose the Foundations of AI and Programming module, expertly led by Dr. Cristiana Tisca, who holds a PhD from the University of Oxford in neuroimaging and cognitive sciences. She is also a recognized professional in artificial intelligence. Under her guidance, we explored the complexities and possibilities of AI. From the very first session, I was immersed in an environment that fostered not only improvement and learning but also practicality and critical thinking. The programming projects, specifically the hands-on coding sessions, were challenging but immensely rewarding.
Another highlight of my time was participating in the Financial Industrial Immersion. This allowed me to step outside the classroom and into the real world of entrepreneurship. We had the incredible opportunity to engage with top CEOs and visit prominent institutions such as Barclays, Moody’s, Oxford Saïd Business School, and Canary Wharf. During these visits, we met with successful entrepreneurs and discussed a lot of topics, one of which was the ethical implications of AI in finance, prompting me to think deeply about the broader impact of the technologies we are developing.
Beyond academics, the cultural and social aspects of the program were equally enriching. Living and studying at Linacre College provided an authentic taste of life at one of the world’s most prestigious universities. The historic surroundings of Oxford, with its cobblestone streets and centuries-old architecture, created a captivating backdrop for our studies. Walking through Oxford’s storied courtyards and catching glimpses of the Bodleian Library offered a tangible connection to the rich academic heritage that has shaped not only countless scholars but also innovators, leaders, and world-changers throughout history.
One of the most breathtaking experiences was flying an airplane with the help of an experienced instructor pilot. Seeing the entire city of Oxford beneath me was a surreal and awe-inspiring moment that added a unique thrill to the program. Additionally, our excursions to London allowed us to visit iconic landmarks such as the Tower of London, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park, the Houses of Parliament, and many more. Exploring these historic sites deepened my appreciation for the rich culture and history surrounding both Oxford and London.
The Oxford Scholars Programme also introduced me to a global network of peers who share my passion for learning and innovation. The friendships I formed during those two weeks are connections I hope to maintain forever. Though we came from all corners of the globe, we were united by a common goal: to learn, grow, and make a difference.
Reflecting on my time at OSP, I now realize this experience was far more than just an academic journey—it was a path of self-discovery and personal growth. The lessons I learned, the challenges I overcame, and the memories I made will stay with me throughout my life. The Oxford Scholars Programme didn’t just expand my knowledge; it ignited my curiosity, fueled my passion and potential, connected me with like-minded individuals, and opened my eyes to the endless possibilities ahead. This experience has been truly unforgettable, leaving a lasting impact that will shape my future for years to come.
